WorkSafe

Regulation and promotion of workplace health and safety including in general industry and the mining and petroleum industries.
Last updated:

WorkSafe assists the regulator in the administration of the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 (WHS Act) and Dangerous Goods Safety Act 2004 (DGS Act).

Our vision

  • Healthy and safe workplaces in Western Australia.
  • Safe storage, handling and transport of dangerous goods in Western Australia.

Our goals

  • To reduce work-related fatalities by ten percent and reduce the incidence of serious injuries and illnesses by seven percent over the three year period 2023-24 to 2025-26.
  • To minimise the number of dangerous goods incidents, by ensuring dangerous goods are used and transported safely.

Find out more about our work health and safety (WHS) goals and strategies in our three-year strategy, WorkSafe: The way forward.

What we do

Our role is to drive workplace change through education, specialist advice and enforcement.

  • Compliance and enforcement: We ensure duty holders comply with the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 and the Dangerous Goods Safety Act 2004.
  • Education and guidance: We provide resources to employers and workers to help them manage risks and adopt safe work practices. These resources are available both on the WorkSafe website and on the SafetyLine Hub.
  • Inspections and investigations: Our inspectors and dangerous goods officers inspect workplaces, investigate incidents, and help identify hazards to prevent harm.
  • Support for employers and workers: We offer information and advice on health and safety systems and safe work practices.

WorkSafe’s collaborative approach is fostered through working with peak work health and safety bodies including the Work Health and Safety Commission and the Mining and Petroleum Advisory Committee. These peak bodies include representatives of employers, unions and WHS experts, collectively influencing workplace environments and building industry capacity to deliver strong WHS performance.

Our model for WHS compliance is explained in our Compliance and enforcement policy and extends from education, capacity building and preventative measures through to enforcement. WorkSafe’s Prosecution policy explains how decisions about prosecutions are made.
