The Department of Finance is committed to ensuring everyone can easily access our services and receives the best possible customer experience. All interpreting services are provided free of charge to non-English speaking individuals.
How to engage an interpreter
If you need to contact the Department of Finance and you’re unable to communicate in English, or you’re not confident enough to communicate in English, you can use an interpreter to assist. Interpreting services can be delivered over the phone, in person or by video.
There are three options available for you to engage an interpreter, see below:
Option 1 – Organising an interpreter yourself:
- Call the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National) on 131 450 – you will hear an automated voice in English asking you what language you need interpreting.
- Say your language and an automated voice in your preferred language will advise you. Stay on the line and you’ll be connected to the next available interpreter in your language.
- Once connected to an interpreter, advise them you need to speak to the Department of Finance, provide the phone number for the Department of Finance, and they will connect you and interpret your messages into English to a Finance employee.
Option 2 – Contact Department of Finance direct:
- Dial the relevant Department of Finance number:
• To the best of your ability, advise you have a query but need an interpreter.
• Provide your name, language, and phone number.
• The Finance staff member will then call TIS National and request immediate phone interpreting for you.
Option 3 – Using a family member or friend to interpret
- In the event an accredited interpreter isn’t readily available, and you have a family member or friend that can interpret and speak English, you may use them to interpret for you. On this occasion the Finance employee will gain your consent before speaking with your family member or friend.
