Managing asbestos in government buildings

Western Australian WHS legislation imposes a general duty upon persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) at a workplace about eliminating risks arising from managing and controlling in-situ asbestos-containing materials (ACM), or if that is not reasonably practicable, minimise the risks so far as is reasonably practicable.

The Work Health and Safety (General) Regulations (WHS) include specific requirements for PCBU’s in relation to managing ACM.

These duties are outlined in the following approved codes of practice:

Code of Practice How to manage and control asbestos in the workplace

Code of Practice How to safely remove asbestos

The Department of Finance provides a range of services to assist Government agencies in the management of risks associated with ACM in accordance with the WA WHS legislation.
