Support for International Education

One of the safest places in the world to visit, Western Australia is home to top-ranked education institutes with more than 125 high-quality education providers offering excellent programs, a great lifestyle and a wealth of employment opportunities.

Through the  Western Australian Government’s $185 million Reconnect WA Plan and $77 million Safe Transition Industry Support Package,  a number of programs are available to support International Education providers and international students. These include:

  • $6 million Industry Support Payment for International Education providers;
  • $8 million Student Quarantine Support Program;
  • $2 million University Services for Students Support Program;
  • $7.5 million Accommodation Subsidy;
  • $3 million ELICOS Bursary.

International Student ELICOS Bursary (ISEB) fund

Applications for the International Student ELICOS Bursary (ISEB) fund are now open

International Student ELICOS Bursary (ISEB) fund

The International Student ELICOS Bursary (ISEB) fund is for international students who: ·

  • are enrolled in an approved provider ELICOS course commencing on or before 27 June 2022 
  • are studying full-time and undertaking a course of at least 20 weeks duration ·
  • have arrived in Western Australia to commence studies in person in 2022 ·
  • were not in Western Australia for study purposes at any time in 2021.

A one-off payment of $1500AUD will be available to assist eligible international students with ELICOS course fees for Semester one 2022.

Applications are currently open and will close at 5.00pm (AWST) on Wednesday 29 June 2022, or when program funds have been exhausted.

International Student Accommodation Subsidy (ISAS) fund

Applications for the International Student Accommodation Subsidy fund are now closed

International Student Accommodation Subsidy (ISAS) fund

The International Student Accommodation Subsidy (ISAS) fund is for international students who: ·

  • are enrolled in an eligible course of 12 months or longer
  • are studying full-time in Semester 1, 2022 and the course runs for at least one year/ two semesters/ all of 2022
  • arrived in Western Australia from an international location to commence or recommence your studies in person in Semester 1, 2022
  • were not in Western Australia for study purposes anytime in 2021.

A one-off payment of $1500AUD will be available to assist up to 5000 eligible international students with accommodation costs for Semester one 2022.

International Student Self Quarantine Support (ISSQ) fund

Applications for the International Student Self Quarantine Support fund are now closed

International Student Self Quarantine Support fund

The International Student Self-Quarantine (ISSQ) fund is for international students who:

  • are enrolled at an eligible Western Australian educational institution, studying for a course that is at least one month in length and starts in semester one (or equivalent); and
  • arrived in Western Australia between 20 January 2022 and 2 March 2022 and were required to undertake mandatory self-quarantine.

A one-off payment of $2,000 will be available to support international students return to Western Australia for those applicants that meet the eligibility criteria for the fund.  Up to 4000 payments are available. 

The International Student Self Quarantine Support fund has limited funding.

International Student Self Quarantine Support fund Eligibility

  1. You are an international student enrolled with an eligible Western Australian education provider (i.e. University, ELICOS, TAFE, VET, higher education pathway college or secondary school) to commence study in semester one (or equivalent), substantiated by a copy of your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE); and your course must be of one month duration or longer.
  2. You entered Western Australia between 20 January 2022 and 2 March 2022, substantiated by a copy of your travel documents;
  3. You undertook mandatory self-quarantine in Perth, substantiated by a copy of your G2G pass approval;
  4. You have an Australian bank account, substantiated by a copy of your bank statement.

If you are an international student enrolled in secondary school and aged less than 16 years, your guardian can apply for your payment and it can be paid to their Australian bank account. Please note your guardian will be contacted after the application is submitted to provide additional evidence of their relationship with you.

International Education Industry Support payment

Applications for International Education Industry Support payments are now closed

International Education Industry Support payment

The International Education Industry Support Payment 2022 is available to eligible CRICOS-registered small and medium sized private international education providers based and operated in Western Australia (WA). who; ·

  • have a valid and active Australian Business Number (ABN) 
  • be considered a small or medium business as per:
    • a small-sized business employing 19 or less employees (casual workers excluded)
    • a medium-sized business employing between 20 and 199 employees (casual workers excluded) ·
  • have an active Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses from Overseas Students (CRICOS) provider code
  • the business must be registered, based and operated in WA ·
  • be a legal entity that is able to enter into a funding agreement with the WA Government ·
  • be a provider that relies on international students as its core business.

Grants of $50,000 are available for eligible smaller-sized providers and $100,000 for eligible medium-sized providers.

The international education provider support payment has limited funding.

Support payments for universities

As part of the Western Australian Government’s Safe Transition Industry Support Package, universities will receive $500 per international student required to quarantine to provide support services during their time quarantining in Western Australia.
