The Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA) is part of the Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration (DMPE). As a trusted, world-leading geological survey operation, we provide objective and authoritative geoscientific data, information and services to support the responsible use of the State’s natural resources. About the program
This exciting two-year graduate program supports students during their penultimate year of either their Honours or Master’s degree in geoscience or data science. Eligible applicants must be attending a Western Australian university and be scheduled to finish the final year of their degree by the end of 2027. The program offers a competitive edge in the resources sector. It provides you with a broad range of advanced and applied geoscience skills as well as a deep-dive into how to access and use geoscience data.
Further, it creates unique opportunities for sharing knowledge and on-the-job applied geoscience training. Graduates acquire technical skills that are applicable across all industry sectors rather than being industry - or task - specific. This competitive edge enables graduates to enter the resources sector with confidence and a diverse geoscience background that should propel their career in the resources industry.
In the first year of the program, your Honours or Master’s studies are supported by a stipend of $35,000 to $50,000, including between $12,000 and $20,000 for course fees, and $5,000 to $15,000 of research support funds, depending on the type of degree you are studying.
In the second year, after you complete your Honours or Master’s degree, you work as a full-time employee with a starting salary of $90,256 per year (as at 2026) plus 12 per cent superannuation.

Applications for the 2028 IRGP graduate cohort are open between July 22 and August 20 2026 (2028 refers to the year that you would start at GSWA, with successful applicants to finish their degree by December 2027.)
