Greenhouse gas (GHG) reservation of blocks

GHG reservation of blocks in Western Australia.
Last updated:

On 3 June 2026, via the Government Gazette, the Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration (the department) under delegation from the Minister for Mines and Petroleum, pursuant to section 28(1b) of the Petroleum, Geothermal Energy and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 1967, declared a reservation of graticular blocks that comprise the GHG Prime Areas. These areas are set aside to be drawn on for future GHG Acreage Release.

As such, the reserved areas shall not be the subject of a GHG exploration permit, GHG drilling reservation, GHG retention lease, GHG injection licence, GHG special prospecting authority or GHG access authority.

The reservation of these graticular blocks remains in effect until 16 October 2027 unless otherwise varied or revoked.

Registered users of Tengraph Web and Geoview.WA can now view this publicly available layer on those platforms under the designated GHG Prime Areas (Declared Reserved Blocks) filtered layer.
