Prime areas refer to reserved areas of Western Australia not subject to a live title that have a high likelihood of prospectivity and/or proximity to essential infrastructure that would facilitate future development.
Reserved blocks declared under sections 28(1) (petroleum), 28(1a) (geothermal energy) or 28(1B) (greenhouse gas) of the Petroleum, Geothermal Energy and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 1967 shall not be the subject of an exploration permit, drilling reservation, retention lease, production or injection licence, special prospecting authority or access authority, relevant to that resource type. The reservation remains in effect for a set period unless otherwise revoked or varied.
Declared prime areas
The Minister for Mines and Petroleum has declared prime areas within the State for petroleum and geothermal energy resources, and greenhouse gas storage. These reserves will be drawn on when considering future acreage releases.
The public can view current designated prime areas for petroleum and geothermal energy resources, and greenhouse gas storage via Tengraph Web. To see the spatial layer, the user must select the relevant layer for petroleum, geothermal energy or greenhouse gas prime areas (Declared Reserved Blocks).
More information is available in the Acreage release and designated prime areas guidelines.
