National Redress Scheme for Institutional Child Sexual Abuse

The Western Australian Parliament has passed the National Redress Scheme for Institutional Child Sexual Abuse (Commonwealth Powers) Act 2018 (WA).
Last updated:

This allows the WA Government and WA-based non-government institutions to participate in the scheme. The WA Government has been participating in the National Redress Scheme since 1 January 2019.

Its participation recognises Western Australians who have experienced child sexual abuse in government institutions, with a view to righting past wrongs and making amends.

It also provides a simpler and more streamlined alternative to pursuing civil litigation through the courts.

The Western Australia Redress Coordination Unit has been established within the Commissioner for Victims of Crime Office, Department of Justice, to support the WA Government’s participation in the scheme.
