What is eInvoicing?

Discover eInvoice enabled WA Government agencies

Electronic Invoicing is a secure and standardised way to send and receive invoices directly between accounting systems, without the need for emails, PDFs or manual entry.

The PEPPOL (Pan-European Public Procurement Online) framework is an internationally recognised standard adopted in Australia to streamline invoicing across government and business. It enables suppliers to submit invoices through accredited service providers known as Peppol Access Points, ensuring faster, more reliable and secure delivery.

In Australia, eInvoicing is supported by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and is being adopted across all levels of government. By implementing eInvoicing, the WA Government is helping suppliers receive payments faster, reduce administrative costs and improve the accuracy of invoice data.

WA Government's eInvoicing Program

The Office of Digital Government is leading the WA Government’s Program for the adoption of eInvoicing with the objective of reducing payment times to business suppliers. The Program, launched in 2022, is divided into three stages to fulfill this commitment across the entire WA Government.

  1. Stage 1 took a low-risk approach to eInvoicing adoption, starting with a technical pilot involving three agencies. This stage aimed to determine the feasibility of implementing a central Access Point across the diverse financial systems used by WA Government agencies. Stage 1 was completed in November 2023.
  2. Stage 2, currently in progress, is focused on expanding eInvoicing from the technical pilot to actual adoption within the first WA Government agencies.
  3. Subject to government approval, Stage 3 is intended to represent further expansion of the eInvoicing Program, eventually enabling all WA Government agencies to send and receive eInvoices.

Benefits of eInvoicing

Adopting eInvoicing through the Peppol network offers significant advantages for businesses supplying to government. It supports faster invoice processing and quicker payments, reduces administrative costs by eliminating paper-based and manual handling, and improves data accuracy through standardised formats. eInvoicing also enhances security by sending invoices directly between financial systems via a trusted, encrypted network—reducing the risk of fraud and lost invoices. For suppliers, this means greater efficiency, fewer errors and improved cash flow.

How to get started

If your business uses an eInvoicing-ready product such as MYOB or Xero, you may already be able to send and receive eInvoices. Refer to the ATO’s eInvoicing Ready Product Register to confirm whether your software is supported.

If you use other accounting software, contact your provider to determine if eInvoicing functionality is available. If not, you may need to engage an accredited Peppol Access Point provider to integrate your system with the eInvoicing network.

For more detailed information, visit the ATO's eInvoicing for Businesses page.
