Make a Freedom of Information request

The Freedom of Information Act 1992 provides the public with access to documents held by the Local Government Inspector, subject to exemptions.

Freedom of Information (FOI) requests for information held by the Local Government Inspector are managed by and must be submitted to the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety with clear identification and scope.

If your request is too broad – for example “all documents” – you will be asked to narrow the scope of your application. Your application must be specific to ensure that documents can be located.

To submit a valid request, your application must:

  • be submitted using the online form or written application form
  • include a current postal address in Australia
  • include identification
  • contain enough information so that the document(s) you are requesting can be identified
  • be as clear and concise as possible to assist with processing your application as soon as possible
  • be accompanied by the application fee if you are submitting a non-personal information application.

FOI request fees

No application fee or charges apply if you are seeking personal information that is about you.

If you are seeking information that is not just about you (defined as ‘non-personal information’), the application fee is $30.

Requests for local government documents

Requests for documents held by local governments must be directed to the relevant local government body, not to the Local Government Inspector.
