Learn about your local council.

  1. Attend at least one (preferably more) council meeting at your local government.
  2. Go to your local government’s website and read some previous council meeting agendas and minutes.
  3. Make yourself familiar with your local government’s council meeting schedule.
  4. Read the local government’s council policies.
  5. Read the local government's strategies and plans.

This will give you a sense of the role of council and council members, and the workload involved in being a council member.
