Strategic Goals 2026-2027

A new Office of the Information Commissioner in Western Australian (the OIC) was created on 1 July 2025, with responsibilities under the Information Commissioner Act 2024 (WA), the Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Act 2024 (WA) (PRIS Act) and the Freedom of Information Act 1992 (WA) (FOI Act)The OIC is on a people, process and technology transformation journey to ensure it is capable of meeting its statutory remits. The OIC’s strategic goals are also part of that change transformation. Our interim annual goals, as we continue to build the new OIC are outlined below. 

Foster trust and accountability by promoting an effective information access and privacy culture across regulated entities

  • Provide clear, accurate, relevant and timely advice to regulated entities to enhance understanding of their responsibilities under the PRIS and FOI Acts.
  • Ensure our resources, policies and services support information access and privacy competency within regulated entities
  • Identify process and administrative improvements to facilitate information access and privacy practices 
  • Explore opportunities for collaboration to champion privacy and open government

Provide fair, independent and timely privacy complaint and external review services

  • Provide efficient and effective early resolution processes
  • Provide fair, timely and effective informal resolution and conciliation processes where appropriate
  • Provide clear and concise decisions and determinations for matters that cannot be informally resolved or conciliated, with reasons, to best inform the public and regulated entities

Enhance public awareness and understanding of privacy and freedom of information in Western Australia

  • Ensure we provide the community with accessible, inclusive and user-friendly information
  • Increase community awareness of privacy and freedom of information rights
  • Promote community understanding about the role of the Information Commissioner

Foster a supportive and collaborative workplace to advance staff capabilities and encourage innovation and creativity

  • Ensure our organisational structure promotes open lines of reporting and communication
  • Value and acknowledge achievements
  • Enhance working arrangements and professional development
  • Cultivate a positive organisational culture that supports wellbeing

Invest in sound information systems to support our operational needs

  • Use technology to improve efficiency and accessibility to our services
  • Procure a case management system to manage increased volumes of work across privacy and freedom of information
  • Refine our electronic records management system to ensure effective efficient management of our record-keeping obligations
