Mobile safety cameras

The Road Safety Commission is committed to exploring new and emerging technologies to make our roads safer for everyone.

The WA government has approved funding for the procurement of an initial six mobile safety camera trailers for use throughout Western Australia.

The Road Safety Commission will undertake a competitive procurement process for the safety cameras, which will be funded from the WA Road Trauma Trust Account.

The safety cameras will be able to identify a number of high-risk behaviours at once including:

  • speeding
  • not wearing a seatbelt; and
  • using a mobile phone while driving.

The safety cameras can also identify in real time heavy vehicles and vehicles towing trailers and caravans exceeding their maximum speed of 100km/h on roads with a speed limit of 110km/h. Further, they have the ability to identify unlicensed vehicles.

A six-month trial of the mobile safety camera trailers commenced in July 2022, which tested the technology on a range of roads in the metropolitan, South West, Wheatbelt, Great Southern, Pilbara, Goldfields and Mid West regions.

In an Australian-first, the mobile cameras were also used in pairs to measure average speed as well as spot-speed.

No infringements were issued during the trial.

Mobile safety cameras are a pivotal component in achieving the WA Driving Change Road Safety Strategy targets by 2030. If you would like more information about the project, email info@rsc.wa.gov.au.
