Statistics overview
Between 2020 and 2024, there were 1578 reported crashes on roads in the Goldfields-Esperance region. Of these, 14% resulted in at least one person being killed or seriously injured.
Between 2020 and 2024, there were 278 people Killed or Seriously Injured (KSI) in reported crashes, including 56 fatalities and 222 people seriously injured. This equates to 100.4 people KSI per 100,000 population.
Demographic data
Of those 278 people KSI between 2020 and 2024:
- 74% were occupants of motor vehicles
- 13% were motorcyclists
- 11% were pedestrians
- 2% were cyclists
Almost three-quarters (70%) of people KSI were male, 29% were female and 1% had no sex recorded.
The three most common age groups of people KSI were:
- 20-29 years old (21%)
- 30-39 years old (19%)
- 40-49 years old (15%)
- 50-59 years old (13%)
Common crash circumstances
People KSI were most often injured in:
- Non-collision crashes (34%)
- Hit object crashes (18%)
- Right angle crashes (11%)
People KSI were most often in crashes on:
- 110 km/h sections of road (54%)
- 50 km/h sections of road (15%)
- 60 km/h sections of road (10%)
Of those people KSI, 19% were involved in crashes at intersections.
Almost half (47%) were involved in crashes on local roads, while 36% were involved in crashes on state roads and the remaining 16% were involved in crashes on other types of roads, road-related areas or the location was not recorded.
Contributing factors

- 24% of people KSI were in crashes where speed was suspected to be a contributing factor
- 6% were in crashes where inattention was suspected to be a contributing factor
- 14% were in crashes where fatigue was suspected to be a contributing factor
- 27% of motor vehicle occupants KSI were not wearing a seatbelt
- 14% of motorcyclists KSI were not wearing a helmet
