School zones are frequented by some of our most vulnerable road users, with children and families walking, riding and being dropped to school each weekday.
To help keep these areas safe, we are implementing a range of initiatives to increase awareness and encourage slower, safer driving.
Speed indicator devices (smiley face)
To support and encourage safe driving in school zones, we are rolling out smiley face speed indicator devices across WA schools.
These devices provide an immediate visual reminder for drivers to slow down. When a motorist approaches a school zone over the speed limit, the device displays a red ‘slow down’ warning. When they are travelling safely, a green smiley face appears giving instant, positive feedback.
In addition to encouraging safer driving, the devices also collect real-time speed data. This information helps us better understand traffic patterns around schools and supports future road safety planning and initiatives.
The devices are being trialled at the following locations:
- Pearson Street near Hale Road in Churchlands
- Nicholson Road near Tobermory Pass in Canning Vale
- Beach Road near Alvaston Drive in Carine
- Murdoch Drive near Marsengo Road in Murdoch
By working together and keeping alert in school zones, we can help protect our children and create safety roads for everyone.
Speed enforcement program
To further help keep school zones safe, we are introducing a new school zone speed enforcement program. Over the next two years, 20 new school zone safety cameras will be rolled out to detect drivers exceeding the speed limit in 40km/h school zones.
These fixed safety cameras are designed to encourage safer driver behaviour by reducing speed where it matters most.
While the devices will be fixed for long periods, they can be relocated to different school zones. This flexibility allows for wider coverage and helps ensure more school communities benefit from safer driving environments.
The first school zone safety camera has been installed on Soldiers Road in Mundijong, adjacent to Court Grammar School.
By enhancing speed enforcement in school zones, we aim to reduce speeding, lower the risk of crashes and make it safer for children and families travelling to and from school.
For more information about other types of safety cameras visit the Safety Cameras page.
Children’s crossing improvement program
The School Zones and Children’s Crossing Improvement Program improves safety at school warden crossings by installing 40km/h speed signs, including electronic signs on higher speed roads.
This program is managed by Main Roads and is funded by the Road Safety Commission’s special purpose account that reinvests all safety camera fines into road safety initiatives – the Road Trauma Trust Account.
More information about the program is available on the Main Roads website.
