To add new firearm(s) to an existing Collector Licence, you will need to:
- Provide a completed Firearms Identification and Serviceability Certificate
- Provide information about the firearm’s significant commemorative, historical, or thematic value
- Provide evidence that you meet the relevant Storage Requirements
- Complete the process outlined below

STUDENT OF ARMS
A student of arms is someone who can demonstrate a prolonged and genuine interest in the study, preservation or collection of firearms.
APPROVED SOCIETY OF FIREARM COLLECTORS
There are currently 5 approved societies of firearm collectors. They are:
- West Australian Military Heritage Society SSAA
- The Western Australia Arms & Armour Society (Inc.)
- Historic and Antique Firearm Research Association (Inc.)
- AllGuns Historical Collectors Society Pty Ltd
- Western Australian Student of Arms Society Incorporated
Note: Membership with an approved society of firearm collectors does not automatically qualify a person as a student of arms.
SECURITY & STORAGE
Should your current storage and security arrangements be ineligible for grandfathering, you will be required to provide evidence of upgraded storage and security before your licence can be issued.
If you do require upgraded storage and/or security, you will need to email your completed Storage Statement to FirearmsProject@police.wa.gov.au referencing your licence number.
Please consult the storage matrix below to determine the storage and security requirements that apply to your circumstances. It should be noted that your storage requirements are determined by the number and type of firearms on your licence, plus any other firearms registered to your storage location.
FIREARM SUITABILTY REQUIREMENTS
Category A & B Firearms
In order for a Category A or Category B firearm to be licensed on a Collector Licence, the Commissioner must be satisfied that the firearm has:
- Significant Commemorative Value; or
- Significant Historical Value; or
- Significant Thematic Value
Category C Firearms
In order for a Category C firearm to be licensed on a Collector Licence, the Commissioner must be satisfied that the firearm:
- Has Significant Historical Value; and
- Is not a replica of a firearm
Category H Firearms
In order for a Category H firearm to be licensed on a Collector Licence, the Commissioner must be satisfied that the firearm:
- Was not manufactured within the preceding 50 years; and
- Has Significant Historical Value; and
- Is not a replica of a firearm
Notes:
- A Collector Licence (Firearms) cannot apply to a firearm that could use ammunition to which a Collector Licence (Ammunition) held by the same person applies.
- A Collector Licence cannot apply to a prohibited firearm or a Category D firearm.
- A Collector Licence cannot apply to a major firearm part for a prohibited firearm or a Category D firearm.
