Voluntary Buyback Scheme

On 1 April 2025, the WA State Government announced two new buyback schemes; Voluntary Buyback Scheme 4.0 (Rapid Release Action Firearm) and Voluntary Buyback Scheme 5.0.

The Voluntary Buyback Scheme 4.0 for Rapid Release Action Firearms (RRAF) closed on 14 June 2025.

Any claims for compensation submitted to WA Police before 14 June 2025 will be processed accordingly.

Rapid Release Action Firearms are prohibited under Schedule 2, Division 1 of the Firearms Regulations 2024. If you still have possession of a rapid release action firearm, please surrender it immediately to your local Police Station as part of the States Firearms Amnesty.

Voluntary Buyback Scheme 5.0

All other firearm types: 14 April 2025 until the 14 January 2026. 

Eligibility

Includes all firearms held on an Individual Licence only:

  • surrendered to police/disposed of after 17th January (End of BB3.0) and before 14th April 2025
  • firearms surrendered to police on or after 14th April 2025
  • commences on 14 April 2025
  • concludes on 14 January 2026.

Where a licence holder has possession of their firearm for VBS 5.0

  1. Complete the application form, insuring bank account information is correct (BSB and account number).  
  2. Attend a police station, with your firearm licence, your completed form and firearm(s).
  3. Your application will be verified and processed, and payment will follow to your nominated account in due course.

Where a licence holder no longer has possession of their firearm for VBS Compensation

  1. By online application only using this form.
  2. Noting only:
    1. VBS 5.0 - All licensed firearms surrendered to WA Police or disposed of after 17 January 2025 and before the 14 April 2025.
    2. Complete the VBS Compensation Form (PDF, 1.3MB)

VBS 5.0 compensation/remuneration

Payment is as per the schedule of fees below, based on the type of firearm and when the firearm was first licensed within Western Australia.

VBS 6.0

Commencing 06 October 2025, the new voluntary buyback scheme is extended to licensed WA firearm dealers and WA corporate firearm licence holders until 14 January 2026.  WA Police will contact these licence holders and provide further information and direction.
