Asbestos in a home

Information for homeowners and tenants about dealing with asbestos in domestic premises, including building or renovating, and using a licensed removalist.
Last updated:

Did you know that 1 in 3 Australian homes contain asbestos? As a homeowner or tenant, this page will give you information about dealing with asbestos in domestic premises, including when building or renovating. It also provides you with practical guidance about when to use a licensed asbestos removalist and how to find one.

The most accurate way to find out if your house contains asbestos products is to have it inspected by a competent person. You can’t tell by looking at it!

Asbestos-containing materials (ACM) were commonly used in the construction and renovation of homes until the mid‑1980s, and some products were used until the early 1990s. Many ACMs are reaching the end of their lifecycle, especially if exposed to weather and should be prioritised for removal. If the ACM is in good condition and is left undisturbed, non-friable asbestos presents no known health risks.
