Apology anniversary

The 13 February marks 16 years since Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people received a formal apology from the Australian Government.

The apology acknowledged the grief and trauma resulting from laws, practices and policies that saw Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children removed from their families and communities.
 

The Equal Opportunity Commission also acknowledges discriminatory policies and practices continue to negatively impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people today.

Equality of outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people must be front of mind when developing policies and practices going forward.
