The 17-year-old, described as a “model detainee”, was granted special permission to leave the facility under supervision twice weekly to attend classes.

The Case Planning and Programs Team that coordinated the Day Release has now been nominated for a prestigious Australasian Youth Justice Award.

Corrective Services Commissioner Brad Royce said he’s proud to see the Banksia Hill team recognised among exceptional finalists from across Australia and New Zealand.

“The work of this team to deliver best outcomes for an individual detainee was both challenging and extraordinary,” Commissioner Royce said.

The young person had been in detention 18 months prior to their Day Release and now, after having been released, is furthering her studies in Veterinary Nursing.

Senior Case Manager Anae Johnston said the young person recognised the harm her offence had caused and was determined to use her time at Banksia Hill productively.

“That’s what our therapeutic model of care is about, looking at a person’s individual needs and tailoring supports that work with their strengths and abilities,” Anae said.

“It’s a massive achievement just to be nominated for this Award, acknowledging the positive impact we’ve had on this young person’s life.”

The young person said she’d studied a Certificate II in Animal Care before being sentenced to detention and indicated to staff she wanted to further that learning.

“I wrote a letter saying I’d be interested in the course at TAFE and they made it happen,” she said.

“I used my time as wisely as I could. I definitely think Banksia has helped me. I would have never accomplished what I have without coming here.”

Australasian Youth Justice Award winners will be announced in Melbourne April 16.
