Today we celebrate young people in Western Australia on International Youth Day 2023, and their diverse backgrounds, experiences, stories and interests.

International Youth Day was established by the United Nations (UN) and is held on 12 August each year. This year acknowledges young people’s leadership in causes such as climate change with the theme; ‘Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World.’ This theme is reflective of the level of concern shown by young people in Western Australia regarding climate change, as well as the significant skills and training opportunities presented as part of the transitioning economy.

The State government is committed to empowering young people, especially regarding decisions which will influence and shape their future. The Department has a broad range of initiatives that aim to improve outcomes for young people and support them to thrive.

The Ministerial Youth Advisory Council (MYAC), was established in 2017 and is comprised of up to 12 young Western Australians, aged 15 to 25 years, who draw upon their relevant knowledge, experience and skills to provide advice directly to the Minister for Youth.

Applications to join the MYAC are now open until 10pm Thursday, 12 October 2023, and young people are encouraged to offer their perspectives, skills and experience to help shape Government policy.
Please visit the MYAC page to apply.

Young people are also encouraged to subscribe to the Young People Connect WA database to receive the latest news and updates on initiatives within the Youth portfolio from the Department of Communities. This includes notification about upcoming Expressions of Interest for Youth Week Ambassadors and MYAC members; the opening of new grants programs, and contribute to consultation processes.

This year for International Youth Day 2023, Communities is also celebrating the diverse interests and contributions of young people in Western Australia.
