For many organisations and individuals around Western Australia, inclusion isn’t just something they talk about; it’s a huge part of everything they do.
They take those extra steps to ensure people with disability are included in everyday life.
Take the Rotary Club of Armadale, for example, which has poured its energy into making inclusion a genuine part of everything is does.
It has established and facilitated quiet zones at major events, in partnership and consultation with the City of Armadale. It has also hosted inclusive school holiday programs where young neurodivergent people can join and be supported by volunteers as they connect with peers their own age.
In addition, the club supports many volunteers who are neurodivergent and fosters an inclusive environment that creates opportunities for everyone to be a greater part of their community.
Then there is the Manning Tennis Club, which hosts the Top Spinners Wheelchair Tennis program.
Through the program, the club has created a fun and inclusive space, where people of all ages and abilities can train and play together or individually.
Let’s also put the spotlight on the Kings Park ABI Warriors Inc. As a brain injury support group and registered charity, the group hosts coffee catchup events to support those people who have suffered a variety of injuries, such as strokes, tumours, epilepsy and traumatic brain injuries.
With a growing membership, the group is also offering a range of workshops, such as 3D printing, photography and art.
More than that, members share their stories at seminars to support others on the road ahead and to highlight the possibilities for a strong, positive recovery.
These are just some of groups highlighted as Champions of Inclusion.
To celebrate International Day of People with Disability on 3 December, we put the call out across the State for nominations of those people and organisations who are leading the way in access and inclusion and making a positive difference to the lives of 515,000 Western Australians with disability.
Inclusion guides everything they so, and it shows in the way they show up for others.
