Visitors to WA prisons are warned that tough new penalties will be in play when social visits resume from Saturday, 27 June 2020.

The penalties mean visitors caught with illicit drugs or other contraband could face a maximum fine of up to $12,000 and/or 18 months in jail.

In addition, refusing a search can incur a $6,000 fine and anyone caught loitering around a prison or concealing an article for a prisoner could be fined up to $6,000 and/or face 12 months in jail.

The return of face-to-face social visits follows a three-month suspension to prevent COVID-19 infections in prisons and the detention centre.

Health guidelines will apply, including physical distancing and extra hygiene measures, as well as increased security and searching.

"My aim is to provide a safe and secure environment for both my staff and the people in our care" said Commissioner for Corrective Services, Tony Hassall.

"I take a zero tolerance approach to illicit drugs and contraband that puts the health and safety of our prisoners and detainees at risk," he said.
