The Department of Communities (Communities) funds LeadAbility, a fee-free program that supports the Public Sector Commission’s Building Leadership Impact (BLI) vision for a high-performing, values-driven public sector by fostering inclusive leadership and personal growth.

Communities Senior Project Officer Carla Hush, Valedictorian of the program’s April 2025 cohort, said: “I really enjoyed my experience doing LeadAbility – it was a great development opportunity that gave me new perspectives to leadership and useful tools.

“I learned the importance of having personal values and how aligning them to how we show up every day brings us closer to becoming more authentic leaders.”

Carla’s experience reflects BLI’s emphasis on personal responsibility for growth and robust self-reflection, key conditions for impactful leadership.

It is also an example of how Communities supports the ‘My Contribution’ and ‘My Development’ aspects of its Employee Experience Model.

At the April cohort’s recent graduation, Human Resources Director Mohammad (Jaz) Draman highlighted the program’s role in shifting capability perceptions around disability.

Jaz encouraged the cohort to “continue with your journey, understand the power you all possess and please – keep teaching and sharing with us all”.

His message aligns with BLI’s focus on clear expectations in context and the importance of productive feedback in shaping inclusive leadership across the sector.

Carla and her fellow graduates hailed from government and non-government agencies across Western Australia.

Leadership WA runs LeadAbility twice a year – in April and September – over three months with seven in-person days.

LeadAbility is an entry-level leadership course for people with disability, who have lived experience and/or support people with disability, those working within the sector in disability organisations or in diversity and inclusion positions.
