Senior Aboriginal Education and Conciliation Officer Stephen Goodall, who has been providing training and outreach on both islands for 25 years, said the Indian Ocean Territories now had a solid understanding of equal opportunity legislation.

"Through regular contact with the community the Commission has been able to maintain awareness on both Christmas and Cocos Islands which is evident whenever we do our biannual visits," he said.

Stephen said there were rarely complaints about discrimination and harassment from the communities on Christmas and Cocos Islands, where different ethnic groups lived and worked well together.

"The locals all celebrate each other's significant cultural events, which is something we could learn from on the mainland," he said.

Stephen said he was also pleased by the recent news that Farzian Zainal was appointed Indian Ocean Territories Administrator.

"Ms Zainal is a local woman which means she will hit the ground running when it comes to knowledge about key issues for the community," he said.
