In this role you are not only supporting and guiding the young people, but you’re also responsible for their safety, security and wellbeing as well as that of the Centre and your colleagues.

YCO’s need to be resilient and compassionate, enjoy working with young people and able to think on their feet.

“It’s not an easy role, it comes with challenges, but every day is rewarding,” says YCO Nancy.

“I’m never bored, there’s always something happening to keep me on my toes.”

“It’s also a secure job with the State Government.”

“It’s a great job and can be really fun,” says YCO Shaun.

“We are dealing with troubled young people who are in detention, so it’s important to build a rapport with them and support them on their rehabilitation journey.

“Once you get to know them, you spend time playing games with them and sports, while helping them with day-to-day activities and needs.”
