Fines Enforcement Registry COVID19-response

Media release
The Fines Enforcement Registry is offering some leeway to debtors who are facing financial hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Department of Justice has urged those who owe money in unpaid fines but can demonstrate they are experiencing financial hardship due to COVID-19 to contact the Registry.

This could include those who have either lost their employment or whose working hours have been cut.

The WA FER Registrar said while it was important people paid their debts, it was also important to take into account the hardship people may be facing.

"I would say to these people, please contact us as soon as you can with as much information you can provide us about your circumstances," he said.

"We can’t write off your debt but we can help you manage it."

The Registry will allow affected people to set up a payment plan over a longer period of time, and with a lower minimum repayment.

The contact numbers are 1300 650 235 or 9235 0235 for mobiles.

The Registrar reassures debtors that if they have signed up for a work and development order which has been suspended because of COVID-19, they will not face imprisonment. Again, they should contact FER for further information.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has delayed Parliament’s consideration of the State Government’s fine default reform legislation, it remains a high priority.
