Former Australian Human Rights Commission President Gillian Triggs, former Editor in Chief of West Australian newspapers Bob Cronin, Federal Member for Cowan Anne Aly and former State Member for Southern River Peter Abetz will discuss the topic Has Political Correctness Gone Mad to mark Human Rights Day this year.
Hosted by the WA Equal Opportunity Commission, the discussion will be moderated by Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance WA President Martin Turner and will take place at the State Library Lecture Theatre in Perth on 11 December from 5.30pm to 7pm.
WA Equal Opportunity Commissioner Dr John Byrne said he hoped the high-profile panel would provide some robust discussion on the topic.
“Human rights laws are sometimes described as political correctness gone mad, but while some believe they impinge on personal freedoms, others argue without these laws many would be left vulnerable to discrimination and harassment through no fault of their own,” he said.
Dr Byrne said he would like this to be a lively discussion which demonstrated freedom of speech and human rights could exist side by side.
The free event will give audience members the chance to take part in the discussion by registering questions to the panel when they register their attendance.
“We would like everyone to contribute to the discussion as political correctness is something that affects the entire community,” Dr Byrne said.
