The Community Reference Group (CRG) will act as a conduit between the local community and the project team during building of the $158.5 million facility, ensuring timely information sharing and opportunities for community feedback on construction-related matters.

Located next to the existing Banksia Hill Detention Centre, the standalone new facility will accommodate high-needs, high-risk young people in a secure, therapeutic environment to support their rehabilitation and reintegration.

The project forms part of the WA Government’s continued investment in youth justice infrastructure, with $426 million invested over the past four years including upgrades and the construction of a Crisis Care Unit at Banksia Hill.

“The CRG will provide a forum for two‑way communication between the Department of Justice and the local community during the construction period,” Corrective Services Commissioner Brad Royce said.

“It will help inform the community about upcoming works and how impacts of construction activities will be managed, as well as provide a point of contact for questions, feedback and local insights,” he said.

The CRG will have up to 20 members, comprising local residents along with representatives from local government and community organisations.

Participation in the advisory-only group is voluntary, with meetings to coincide with key project milestones.

“The establishment of this group demonstrates the Department’s commitment to transparent and respectful engagement with local stakeholders,” Department Director General Kylie Maj said.

To register your interest in joining the CRG, or for more information, visit the New youth detention facility, Canning Vale web page. The closing date for expressions of interest is Friday, 24 July 2026.
