The Social Housing Economic Recovery Package (SHERP), a $319 million housing stimulus package dedicated to the delivery and maintenance of thousands of community housing properties across Western Australia, was announced by the State Government in 2020.

With $93 million allocated to the Community Housing Grants Program across three workstreams - New Builds, Refurbishment and Remote Aboriginal Communities Maintenance, Communities will provide funding to approved applicants, for new and upgraded community housing across the State.

Community Housing Refurbishment Grants of almost $58 million have recently been approved for 47 community housing organisations across 11 metropolitan, regional and remote Western Australia areas. This funding, which will help undertake more than 800 refurbishment projects, has particularly benefitted those organisations that provide housing assistance to groups most at risk of finding stable accommodation including people with disability, young people experiencing homelessness, seniors, women and children escaping domestic violence and remote Aboriginal communities.

The much-needed grant funding will assist with innovative projects across the state, with many high-quality projects funded through the Community Housing Grants – Refurbishment stream that will assist in delivering some of the following:

  • A full refurbishment of a safehouse in Roebourne, Western Australia. The safehouse provides supported, safe accommodation for women (with or without accompanying children) who because of family and domestic violence or other crisis, are homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness.
  • Upgrades to a group home that provides full time 24/7 support to adults with Autism who share the home with up to three co-residents.
  • Much needed repairs and upgrades to a youth refuge, this in turn will ensure continuation of providing a safe, welcoming, and comfortable environment for young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, as they develop independent living skills.
