Department of Communities staff continue to work alongside partner agencies and local businesses and community leaders to support the recovery of the Fitzroy Valley from the January 2023 flood event.
We’re committed to supporting families whose homes require either major refurbishment or rebuild with flood resilient temporary accommodation ahead of the upcoming wet season.
Up to 44 temporary demountable accommodation units have started to arrive in Fitzroy Crossing ready for installation on Country in Bungardi, Darlngunaya, Loanbun, Buruwa, Galeru Gorge, Karnparmi and Yurabi communities.
Following community consultation, this demountable accommodation supports family friendly living on country and provides a safe place whilst longer term repair works are underway.
We’ve also increased flood resilience for community members staying in Humanihut accommodation in at either Bungardi and or Tarunda, with each hut being raised to a 1-in-100-year flood level.
The housing works and refurbishment program continues, with local contractors building back better by using flood resilient building materials and treating wall cavities to reduce the chance of mould.
As part of this program, approximately 23 homes are being raised to the new standard of one metre above the 1-in-100-year flood level.
Community members and key dignitaries watched on to see future proofing of homes in action, with the first home in Bungardi raised on Saturday 23 September.
This initiative is jointly funded through the Commonwealth – State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements. For more information, visit: Media Statements - Home.
