As part of Homelessness Week 2025, the Office of Homelessness team rallied staff across the Department of Communities (Communities) to donate clothing, toiletries and essential goods for young people experiencing homelessness – and the response was nothing short of incredible.

Corridors overflowed with kindness, as bags and boxes lined the collection points at our Walyalup and Boorloo offices. Among the many thoughtful contributions were a new microwave, vacuum cleaner, pamper packs, art supplies and warm winter clothing.

Gayle Mitchell, Acting Executive Director, Office of Homelessness helped coordinate the drive and was thankful for the kindness of Communities staff.

“Once again, Communities staff have responded in the most generous way to our call out,” she said.

“Donating small luxuries – not just everyday essentials – can make a real difference to young people, letting them know they are worthy and deserving of nice things, so I would like to say thanks to everyone who donated.”

Donations were delivered to two Communities-funded youth accommodation and support providers – Parkerville Children and Youth Care (Ruby’s) and Youth Futures (TINOCA and Djinda).

Marija Matejic, Acting Program Manager Youth Services at Parkerville Ruby’s explained how the donations will directly impact young people.

"These items – from sleeping bags and toiletries to clothing – help meet immediate needs and offer comfort, dignity and hope during incredibly challenging times,” she said.

“Your generosity reminds these young people they are not alone and helps create safer, more supportive environments where they can begin to rebuild their lives."
