Over $150,000 in funding was announced for successful LGBTIQA+ Inclusion Grants recipients on Sunday 17 May. The announcement coincided with International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).
Delivered by Communities, these grants will fund initiatives that work with and for LGBTIQA+ people and communities towards building a safer and more inclusive Western Australia, aligning to the priority focus areas of Western Australia’s LGBTIQA+ Inclusion Strategy 2025-2035 that was launched last November.
Whilst many LGBTIQA+ people are doing well and enjoy lives of meaning and connection, some LGBTIQA+ people face significantly higher levels of discrimination, stigma and social exclusion, which can contribute to lower health, social, economic and mental health outcomes.
With a focus on regional reach, this year, the grants will support initiatives and projects that demonstrate diversity and intersectional approaches to improve outcomes for LGBTIQA+ people including:
- Kimberley Blak Pride – to build organisational and local community capability broker partnerships for investment and a specific regional LGBTIQA+ strategic plan.
- Pride With Disability Network – to undertake the Make Space for Us visual art project.
- Kids Research Institute Australia – to undertake Moort Pride Yarns project.
- Youth Focus – to deliver Pride Tide Geraldton, a safe, supportive, alcohol-free live music event for 14–25-year-olds to celebrate Pride month.
Communities is the lead agency for Western Australia’s first whole-of-government LGBTIQA+ Inclusion Strategy 2025-2035 (the Strategy) and Action Plan 2025-2030.
The Strategy and Action Plan aim to create a WA where all LGBTIQA+ people and families are valued safe and supported to lead empowered, proud and connected lived, free from discrimination and harm.
Key priorities for implementation of the Strategy include:
- funding the inaugural LGBTIQA+ Peak Body
- delivery of the LGBTIQA+ Inclusion Grants over the next four years
- establishing a cross-government implementation group, with representation from the LGBTIQA+ Peak Body, that will provide oversight for development of the Strategy’s monitoring and evaluation framework and progression and reporting on key actions identified in the Action Plan
- facilitating partnerships between government agencies, the LGBTIQA+ Peak Body, sector organisations and LGBTIQA+ people and communities.
