The Revelation Perth International Film Festival with the support of the Department of Communities have teamed up again to present the enormously successful 'Life in Pictures' short film competition for 2026.

Filmmakers of all ages and skill levels across Western Australia are encouraged to submit films up to three minutes in length that explore themes around positive ageing in the community or the topic of ageism. Ageism refers to stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination directed towards people based on their age.

Entries are now open, closing Friday 19 June 2026 for filmmakers in the following categories:

  • 17 years old or under
  • 18-59 years old
  • 60 years old and over.

Five films from each category will be shortlisted and screened on the closing night of the Revelation Film Festival on 19 July which will include the announcement of the winners in each category. Category winners will each receive a $1,000 cash prize. The screening will be followed by the festival's famous closing night party.

Revelation Perth International Film Festival will also hold free workshops in March, April and May across Perth to provide filmmaking tips and tricks for success in the competition. Schools, aged-care facilities, clubs and other groups, along with individuals and families are encouraged to enter.

"This initiative is one of my favourite things we've ever initiated with the Revelation event," says Festival Director, Richard Sowada. "Providing the opportunity for the entire community to participate in such an important grass-roots discussion in such a creative way is something we're very proud to be part of, and it has such a lasting effect."

The competition ambassadors of local screen and theatre, legends Julia Moody and Michael Loney agree.

"I’m honoured to have been invited to be an ambassador for Life in Pictures: people in relation to each other’s point of view captured on film, how fascinating!"  - Life in pictures ambassador, Julia Moody.

The purpose of the competition is to creatively engage the community in discussions about ageing, what it means to age, and to challenge ageist attitudes.
