To celebrate NAIDOC week, the David Malcolm Justice Centre has been transformed into a canvas for this incredible work of art by a prisoner at Bunbury Regional Prison.

Taking inspiration from his mother’s country north of Warburton - the piece depicts local legend; Marlpa – the protector of land, stories and culture.

The artist says "Through teaching our children we hope we can pass our stories to all Australians so we can all come together for a better future for our grandchildren and our country."

His work took eight hours to apply. It not only welcomes visitors to the DMJC, it’s also a reminder of this year’s theme - ‘Always was, Always will be.’

NAIDOC week is a time for all Australian’s to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and the heritage and successes of our nation's First Peoples.

It’s also a unique opportunity to celebrate the shared histories and achievements of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians and look towards a shared future.

You can see the 'Marlpa Mural at the DMJC building, located at 28 Barrack St Perth, till November 21.
