OICS found the State’s primary women’s remand facility was under pressure but recognised the professionalism, commitment and good practice of staff, noting Melaleuca’s effective reception and court processes, strong bail coordination services, and continued delivery of education and voluntary programs.

“Across the prison, staff were working hard to support women and maintain essential services in difficult circumstances,” OICS said.

Department Director General Kylie Maj said the report recognised staff professionalism while setting clear priorities for improvement.

“Importantly, the report recognises the dedication of our staff who support some of the State’s most vulnerable women while maintaining safe and secure operations in a highly complex environment,” she said.

“The Department is looking to progress reforms aimed at strengthening workforce capability and service delivery and enhancing conditions for women in custody.”

Corrective Services Commissioner Brad Royce said work was underway to address the OICS findings.

“Targeted recruitment and retention initiatives, including the Safer Staffing Review, are building a more stable and capable workforce. We are also committed to improving access to health services, family contact, rehabilitation and meaningful activities,” he said.

“Our focus remains on delivering safe, humane and rehabilitative custody while implementing practical improvements that support better outcomes for women, their families and the broader community.”
