The initiative acknowledges the important contributions of staff working in custodial facilities, in the community, in specialist roles, or in business support to help keep the community safe.
“The new medals are a testament to the daily contributions of our staff who maintain the high standards required in our field,” Corrective Services Commissioner Brad Royce said.
“All uniformed and non-uniformed staff within Corrective Services may be eligible for these honours,” Commissioner Royce said.
The first new medals being awarded are:
Diligent and Ethical Service Medal
Recognises staff who have completed 10 years of service with Corrective Services in WA. This replaces the previous 30-year “Service with Pride Medal.”
A full medal set- including a miniature medal and service bar or badge-is presented at the 10-year mark, with additional clasps awarded for every five years of service thereafter.
Pandemic Response Medal
Acknowledges significant contributions made by staff during a pandemic. To be eligible, staff must have provided diligent and ethical service for a minimum of six months between 15 March 2020 and 4 November 2022. This medal will include a COVID-19 specific clasp.
New medals have been presented to staff at formal ceremonies across WA, with the launch event at Greenough Regional Prison on 6 November.
The rollout is currently focused on serving Corrective Services staff and consideration will later be given to awarding Pandemic Response Medals to former staff.
Two other new honours - the Commissioner’s Medal for Excellence and the Bravery Medal - will be introduced at a later date.
