Michal Lewi AM, a passionate and influential advocate for heritage and the environment in Western Australia, passed away on 12 October 2025 at the age of 94.

Michal’s legacy in heritage conservation is profound. He served as a committee member of the Council and was involved in numerous organisations dedicated to cultural and environmental stewardship. He was Chair and Life Fellow of the National Trust of Western Australia, receiving the Margaret Feilman Medal in 2012 for his outstanding service. He also contributed to CityVision, the Environmental Defender’s Office, and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, where he was made a Fellow in 1999.

His commitment to preserving Western Australia’s built and natural heritage extended to his photography. Michal documented the architecture and streetscapes of Fremantle in the 1970s and captured images of Southeast Asia that have become valuable cultural records. His work featured in publications such as Sense of Place, written by his close friend George Seddon, reflecting his deep appreciation for the relationship between people and place.

A champion of both historic and modern architecture, Michal and his wife Roma commissioned a modernist home on the banks of the Canning River in the early 1960s, designed by architect Dennis Silver. This home remained the heart of the Lewi family for more than six decades and inspired their daughter Hannah to pursue a career in architecture.

Michal’s advocacy was recognised nationally when he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1999 for his services to heritage and the environment.

He is survived by Roma, sons Rupert and Peter, daughter Hannah and grandchildren Philippa, Jane, Huw and Leo.
