Pilbara company fined for illegal landfill

A Pilbara-based lithium mining company has been fined $22,500 for constructing an unauthorised landfill and operating it without approval.

Pilbara Minerals Limited (PML) which owns and operates the Pilgangoora LithiumTantalum Project near Marble Bar, was issued with a $12,500 fine for constructing a landfill and $10,000 for operating it without the necessary approvals under Sections 55 and 56 of the Environmental Protection Act 1986 (EP Act).

The fines have been paid by PML.

Department of Water and Environmental Regulation Executive Director Compliance and Enforcement, Stuart Cowie, said the fine should serve as a timely reminder.

“Companies and other commercial enterprises should operate within the confines of the EP Act and relevant environmental legislation or they will be subject to enforcement action.”
