Pilbara leader named first Co-Chair of Aboriginal Justice Advisory Committee

Respected community leader Henry Lockyer has been appointed as the first Co-Chair of the Aboriginal Justice Advisory Committee (AJAC).

AJAC provides cultural advice and guidance to the Department on justice matters affecting Aboriginal people and communities across Western Australia.

As Co-Chairs of AJAC, Mr Lockyer and the Department's Director General, Kylie Maj, will lead the Committee's work in providing advice to the Attorney General and Minister for Corrective Services on Aboriginal justice policy, priorities and outcomes.

Acting Director General Brad Royce said: “Mr Lockyer’s appointment reflects the Department’s commitment to genuine partnership with Aboriginal people and communities. 

“I am grateful for his leadership and the strong relationships he has built across the Pilbara, which bring invaluable knowledge, experience and community insight to this role,” Mr Royce said.

Mr Lockyer is a Banyjima man who has served as the AJAC member connected to the Pilbara region since May 2023. 

He brings extensive experience in community consultation, Aboriginal community-controlled service delivery, governance and culturally informed engagement across the Pilbara.

Mr Lockyer said he was honoured to take on the role.

“We carry a responsibility to our Peoples and Communities,” Mr Lockyer said. “It is our lived experiences and understanding of the impacts, challenges and solutions that enable us to work in genuine partnership with the Department to identify opportunities, influence change, and contribute to better outcomes.”
