Supervised by prison staff, the eight prisoners collected rubbish at the Chidlow Community Garden and along the side of Old Northam Road in Chidlow.

Under the Prisons Act, Section 95 prisoners are authorised to take part in supervised work programs in the community, usually for not-for-profit groups.

Wooroloo Prison Vocational Support Officer Garry Cross said that taking part in Clean Up Australia Day was a win-win, helping the prisoners and the community.

“We just like to give back to the community and hopefully make a difference,” Mr Cross said.

Over a four-hour period, the prisoners filled around 20 bags of rubbish, collecting food and drink wrappers, glass, plastics, paper as well as items of clothing, even a discarded letter box.
