WA Commissioner for Equal Opportunity Dr John Byrne said he looked forward to the annual event to provide education about the Commission and the Equal Opportunity Act, as well as strengthen networks with other organisations providing services to the LGBTIQA+ community.

"Over the years I have seen so many changes to policies and laws impacting the LGBTIQA+ community that have been positive.

"However, there is still a long way to go, especially for trans youth who remain incredibility vulnerable to discrimination and harassment," he said.

He said he was encouraged by the level of awareness the community had about anti-discrimination laws and their rights under those laws.

"I chatted to many people who were aware of the Law Reform Commission's review of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 and felt positive about the State Government's announced plans to improve protections for the LGBTIQA+ community," Dr Byrne said.
