A total of almost $58 million in grants is being provided to community housing organisations across metropolitan and regional Western Australia.

This funding has been specifically dedicated to organisations that assist people with disability, young people experiencing homelessness, seniors and women and children escaping domestic violence.

The investment will allow for upgrades to existing properties, improving their liveability and longevity. It is anticipated the refurbishments will be completed by late 2024.

Minister for Housing, Hon John Carey MLA, said that it is important to upkeep properties, particularly for those most at risk of being unable to secure suitable housing.

"A key part of delivering that is working closely with community housing providers, and this grants program highlights the close co-operation between the Government and the sector.

"My top priority as the Minister for Housing has been to expand the available stock of social housing, but one of the key challenges we face is an ageing stock.

"Grant programs like this are absolutely critical because they allow us to improve existing homes, and ensure they remain in the system.”

The refurbishment grants have been provided through the Department of Communities' Social Housing Economic Recovery Package (SHERP), a $319 million housing stimulus package dedicated to the delivery and maintenance of thousands of community housing properties across Western Australia.
