A two-year Communicare Breathing Space pilot has been announced for Hedland, making it the first program of its kind rolled out in a regional precinct.

Breathing Space is a residential behaviour change initiative offered to men who have been abusive in their intimate partner and family relationships. It offers participants a secure and supported therapeutic setting, allowing them to understand and take responsibility for their actions.

The program has been successful for 19 years in Calista, with a second program opening in Maylands in 2019.

Today, a $1.8 million Lotterywest grant was presented to Communicare to support the staffing, management and evaluation of the Pilbara-based trial.

The Department of Communities has provided nine residential units for the Hedland Breathing Space program to operate from and dedicated $3.85 million towards renovations.

Refurbishment works were funded through the Department’s Social Housing Economic Recovery Package and undertaken by GBSC Yurra, an Aboriginal-owned registered building company.
