All cells at Roebourne Regional Prison are now air conditioned following the completion of installation at the Pilbara facility.
The project to put ducted air conditioning in the second of the prison’s two male accommodation units wrapped up this month. The first unit was finished earlier this year.
Other parts of the prison, including cells in the female accommodation unit, had air conditioning in place before the retrofitting project.
The expansion of air conditioning met a key recommendation by the independent Inspector of Custodial Services in inspection reports about the prison.
“The health and welfare of people in our care is a priority for Corrective Services and this investment reflects that,” Corrective Services Commissioner Brad Royce said.
“We listened to stakeholder and community concerns and responded appropriately,” Commissioner Royce said.
“Additionally, having all units available for accommodation on completion of the work has enabled us to bring prisoners back on Country,” he said.
