Shining a light on ‘invisible’ carers this National Carers Week

News story
National Carers Week 2023 (15-21 October) is a time to recognise and celebrate Western Australians who provide unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who have disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness, an alcohol or other drug issue, or who are frail aged.

About 2.65 million Australians provide unpaid care and support to a family member or friend.

Unpaid carers were estimated to be providing 2.2 billion hours of unpaid care last year – over 42 million hours every single week. The replacement value of that care was estimated at almost $78 billion, or almost $1.5 billion every week.

The theme for this year’s National Carers Week 2022 is ‘Millions of Reasons to Care.’ In recognition of the week, a number of landmarks will be lit up in aqua blue including the beautiful boab trees in Celebrity Tree Park Kununurra, Albany’s Town Square, the Library and Eastern Goldfields Community Centre in Kalgoorlie as well as a number of landmarks in the Perth CBD.
