Western Australia's power system is evolving and Distributed Energy Resources (DER) are playing a bigger role in the energy mix. DER are small-scale devices that use, generate, or store electricity, such as home solar and battery systems.

To support the evolving role of DER in Western Power’s grid, the WA Government has released a Statement on the Interoperability of Distributed Energy Resources.

This statement details how DER communication and installation will be harmonised in the South West Interconnected System (SWIS). It also sets out how customer-owned DER (like solar panels and batteries) will engage with the evolving power system through remote communications capability.

Exports of electricity back to the grid present an opportunity to maximise the contribution of renewable energy in our electrical system while sharing the value of that energy with consumers who have invested in their own DER.

The approach outlined in this statement will be applied to batteries that are part of the WA Government’s battery rebate and no-interest loans scheme. It sets out the pathway for new and upgraded DER to communicate with Western Power’s network through a standardised and interoperable communication protocol.
