Cadets WA’s River Ranger cadet units participated in River Rescue Day on Friday 17th October, in efforts to collect rubbish along the Swan River foreshore.

The event, arranged by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, was attended by 8 primary school units from around the Perth metropolitan area, 268 cadets and 32 volunteer adult instructors.

River Rescue Day was the first event of its kind, co-designed by cadet unit leaders and instructors during the annual statewide Bush and River Rangers conference in May 2025. The event actively helps the river by involving students in the protection of WA rivers and waterways.

Students also had the opportunity to learn from scientists, marine rangers and other experts in the field, and increase their understanding of the importance of conserving Noongar and European cultural history connected to the water and natural environment.

A whopping 4,152 pieces of rubbish were collected by the units in 1 and a half hours. This equated to 141 litres volume and 20kg in weight.
