The report outlines progress on actions to build climate resilience across Western Australia’s communities, economy and ecosystems.
The Climate Adaptation Strategy, launched in 2023, was developed in consultation with Aboriginal peoples, local governments, businesses, community groups and researchers. It sets out 37 priority actions to help Western Australia prepare for and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
Since its release, four actions have been completed and 33 are underway, focusing on improving understanding of climate risks, strengthening infrastructure resilience, supporting vulnerable communities and enhancing communication about climate science and adaptation responses.
Highlights from the past two years include:
- A new State planning policy and bushfire guidelines to improve risk mitigation.
- Commencement of an Urban Greening Strategy for Perth and Peel.
- Twelve WaterSmart dam demonstration sites showcasing leading on-farm drought resilience techniques, supported by a new app.
- Seven climate action projects funded through the $16.5 million Aboriginal Ranger Program (ARP).
- Support for three Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services through a Services Grant Agreement.
- A Remote Housing Review and Guide recommending resilience strategies for housing, with refurbishment works underway in two remote communities.
- Development of an Aboriginal-led West Kimberley Climate Adaptation Strategy in partnership with the Nulungu Research Institute at the University of Notre Dame Australia (Broome) and the Martuwarra Fitzroy River Council, scheduled for completion in 2025–26.
