The Western Australian Government has released its response to the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability (Disability Royal Commission).

Established in 2019, the Disability Royal Commission centred on the voices of people with disability. Almost 10,000 Australians shared their stories of violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation in public hearings, submissions and private sessions.

Released in September 2023, the Disability Royal Commission Final Report included 222 recommendations for change, of which 132 are applicable to WA.

The recommendations will result in improved legal protections, safer services, and greater accessibility and inclusion to create safer, more empowering environments for people with disability across the state.

Many matters raised through the Disability Royal Commission are complex and sensitive. The WA Government will engage with people with disability, their families and carers, and the broader community when implementing the reforms.

Implementing the recommendations is a shared responsibility across 16 WA Government agencies, as well as between the Commonwealth and other States and Territories.

The Minister for Disability Services will oversee this work, supported by the Department of Communities.

More information about WA’s response is available on the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability webpage.
